A man was killed after he was struck by a crude bomb hurled by unidentified individuals from the Moghbazar Flyover in the capital.
He died on the spot around 7:10pm in front of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command in the Wireless Gate area tonight (24 December).
The deceased has been identified as Siam Majumdar, 21. He worked at a local motor car decoration shop, according to a Dhaka Metropolitan Police press release.
Police sent the body for autopsy to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s morgue.
Initially, it appears that this incident is part of a series of planned and ongoing crude bomb attacks by Awami League activists, intended to create fear and panic among the public, the release added.
DMP also urged the public to notify the nearest police station or contact the national emergency service 999 if they have any information related to those involved in the incident.
As the police work to identify and apprehend the individuals involved, security patrols across Dhaka city have been intensified.
Confirming the matter, Hatirjheel Police Station Sub-Inspector Parthasarathi Das told that senior police officials are present at the scene.
“We have initially learned that one person died in a cocktail explosion,” he said.
Hatirjheel Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mortuza told that a person named Siam died in a crude bomb explosion hurled by miscreants.
No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
An investigation is underway to determine who carried out the explosion and why.
Family members of the deceased and senior police officials are still present at the scene. A case is underway.
Earlier, Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna division, Md Masud Alam, told reporters that a crude bomb was thrown from the flyover by unidentified individuals.
Police suspected that it landed directly on the head of the deceased, leading to his immediate death at the scene, he added.
Siam lived with his family in the Moghbazar area and was on the way to buy snacks, he further said.
After legal procedures, his body will be sent for autopsy at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
