Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar has got back its cancelled licence after the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare withdrew the cancellation order issued following the deaths of six newborns.
The hospital has been allowed to resume operations under three conditions.
The decision was conveyed in a memorandum signed by Health Services Division Secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury on Monday.
Under the conditions, the hospital must continue complying with the provisions of The Medical Practice and Private Clinics and Laboratories (Regulations) Ordinance, 1982. It has also been asked to complete the recruitment process of duty doctors and nurses in line with the licence requirements.
The ministry warned that failure to comply with the licence conditions would allow the authorised government authorities to take legal action against the hospital.
Advocate Shishir Manir, legal counsel for the hospital authority, confirmed the restoration of the licence. In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Alhamdulillah. Fact: Ad-din Medical College Hospital has regained its licence.”
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) cancelled the hospital’s licence on June 11 following an investigation into the deaths of six newborns at its post-delivery ward on May 27.
The incident occurred between 6:00 am and 9:00 am on the day before Eid-ul-Adha, when six newborns died one after another at the hospital.
A health ministry investigation committee later found evidence of negligence by the hospital authorities. The committee identified overcrowding, prolonged disruption of air conditioning without alternative ventilation and increased carbon dioxide levels in the ward as possible causes behind the deaths.
Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain disclosed the findings of the investigation on June 4. The DGHS subsequently issued a show-cause notice to the hospital authorities, asking why the licence should not be cancelled.
Although the hospital submitted a reply after seeking additional time, the health minister later said the explanation was not satisfactory, leading to the cancellation of the licence.
