Amnesty demands justice for Hadi murder and attacks on media houses

Amnesty International has called on Bangladesh’s interim government to take immediate steps to hold perpetrators of violence and killings accountable through fair trials without recourse to the death penalty.

The human rights organisation urged the government to ensure prompt, thorough, independent and impartial investigations into the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi and the subsequent mob violence that led to arson attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo, The Daily Star and Chhayanaut, as well as the harassment of New Age editor Nurul Kabir.

“Furthermore, we are alarmed by the lynching of Hindu garment worker Dipu Chandra Das following allegations of blasphemy,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

The rights body condemned the mob violence, which has resulted in injuries, destruction of property and loss of life.

Hadi, a prospective candidate for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on 12 December whilst travelling in a rickshaw in Puratan Paltan, Dhaka. He died on Thursday night whilst undergoing treatment in Singapore.

His death triggered a wave of violent incidents across the capital, including attacks on media houses, cultural institutions and religious minorities.
