The bodies of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed in a terrorist drone attack during a UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s Abyei region have arrived in Bangladesh. The coffins were draped in the nation’s flag.
The bodies arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital at 11:05am today (20 December) aboard an Emirates Airlines flight.
The Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army, Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, received the bodies.
“A minute of silence was observed upon receiving the coffins. Subsequently, all military officers present paid tribute to their fallen comrades by rendering a salute, conferring state honours upon the martyred peacekeepers,” said a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).
The release also said the funeral prayers for the deceased will be held tomorrow, Sunday (21 December), at the central mosque of Dhaka Cantonment.
Following the prayers, the bodies will be transported via army helicopters to their respective home villages.
“The fallen heroes will be buried with full military honours,” added the release.
On 13 December, militants launched a sudden drone attack on a UN peacekeeping base in Sudan’s conflict-ridden Abyei region. The six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed instantly in the brutal assault, which struck the logistics base in Kadugli.
Nine other peacekeepers were wounded in the attack. Eight of the injured have been admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital (Level-3) in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, for advanced treatment.
ISPR reported that all those currently undergoing treatment are now out of danger.
