At least seven people were killed and six others injured after a rice-laden truck lost control and overturned into a roadside ditch in the Hasanpur area of Cumilla’s Daudkandi upazila early today (14 April).
The accident took place around 3:10am on the Chattogram-bound lane of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, police said.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Afzal Hossain, 35, Sohrab Hossain, 40, Salek, 45, Sumon, 21, Bishu, 35, Abu Hossain, 30, and Abdur Rashid, 55. All victims hailed from Nawabganj and Birampur upazilas of Dinajpur district.
Quoting locals and witnesses, Iqbal Bahar Mazumder, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daudkandi Highway Police Station, said the Chattogram-bound truck was transporting rice from Dinajpur.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the highway and plunge into a ditch. The victims, who were travelling on top of the rice sacks, were crushed under the weight of the vehicle and the cargo,” the OC said.
Seven people died on the spot, while six others sustained injuries.
Upon receiving the news, police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. The injured were rescued and rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
Police have seized the truck (Dhaka Metro-Ta-13-1209), and the bodies have been recovered.
