Evaly MD Rassel, Chairperson Nasrin Arrested Again, 200 Warrants Hang Over Them

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has again arrested Mohammad Rassel, managing director of the controversial e-commerce platform Evaly, and its chairperson Shamima Nasrin over allegations of fraud.

A DB team arrested the couple around midnight on Monday (January 19) from the Dhanmondi area of the capital. The arrest was later confirmed by Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, who said the police station had been formally informed of the DB operation.

A DB official told the media that more than 200 arrest warrants have been issued against Mohammad Rassel and Shamima Nasrin in multiple cases filed with Dhanmondi, Kafrul, and Savar police stations. Of these, over 100 warrants are pending with Dhanmondi Police Station alone. However, authorities have not yet disclosed the specific case under which the latest arrests were made.

Earlier, the couple had been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion on September 16, 2021, from the Mohammadpur area following a case filed by an Evaly customer.

After spending nearly eight months in jail, Shamima Nasrin was released on bail on April 6, 2022. Mohammad Rassel was granted bail later and released from prison on December 19 last year.

Evaly, once one of Bangladesh’s most high-profile e-commerce startups, has been under investigation for allegedly defrauding customers and merchants through advance payments and undelivered products, triggering hundreds of cases across the country.
