Bangladesh Summons Myanmar Ambassador Over Border Gunfire Incident

Bangladesh has summoned the ambassador of Myanmar and delivered a strong warning against any provocative actions along the border.

Myanmar’s ambassador to Bangladesh, U Kyaw Soe Moe, was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, January 13, following a recent incident in which gunfire from across the border entered Bangladeshi territory near Hwaikyang Union in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl was seriously injured in the incident. Bangladesh expressed deep concern and emphasized that firing into Bangladeshi territory without provocation is a clear violation of international law and undermines good neighborly relations.

The ministry urged Myanmar to take full responsibility and implement necessary measures to prevent any recurrence of such border incidents. Bangladesh also stressed that it is Myanmar’s responsibility to ensure that any conflict or internal situation involving its authorities or armed groups does not affect the lives and livelihoods of people in Bangladesh.

In response, Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe assured that his government would take appropriate steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. He also conveyed his sincere sympathy to the injured child and her family.
