Tarique collects nomination form for Dhaka-17

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is set to contest the upcoming national election from a constituency in the capital alongside Bogura.

He will run from the Dhaka-17 constituency, comprising the upscale areas of Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara.

Around 11:00am today (28 December), Tarique’s personal secretary and former bureaucrat ABM Abdus Sattar collected the nomination paper on his behalf from the office of Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharfuddin Ahmed Chowdhury.

According to BNP sources, Bangladesh Jatiyo Party (Manzu) Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho was earlier expected to contest the Dhaka-17 seat with BNP support, although no formal announcement was made.

Later, senior BNP leaders requested Tarique Rahman to contest from Dhaka-17 in addition to Bogura-6.

Following this, Partha decided to withdraw from Dhaka-17 out of respect for Tarique and announced that he would contest from Bhola-1 instead.

Tarique completed his biometric enrolment at the Election Commission office in Agargaon yesterday.

He and his daughter Zaima Rahman have been registered as voters in DNCC Ward No 19 under the Gulshan area of the Dhaka-17 constituency.

In Dhaka-17, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to field SM Khaliduzzaman as its candidate, while filmmaker Zahir Raihan’s son, Tapu Raihan, has also announced that he will contest the seat as an independent candidate.
