The Government of Canada has urged its citizens residing in Bangladesh to exercise heightened caution due to the evolving law and order situation surrounding the upcoming national elections.
On Wednesday, December 24, Canada updated its travel advisory, warning of potential unrest as Bangladesh prepares to hold national elections on February 12, 2024, following reforms under the interim government.
The advisory notes that demonstrations are expected before, during, and after the elections, including on December 25. Large gatherings in Dhaka and other major cities could disrupt traffic and daily activities. Authorities may strengthen security measures and impose movement restrictions during this period.
Even peaceful assemblies may occasionally be disrupted, leading to interruptions in transportation across urban centers. Travelers planning to move outside city areas are advised to remain aware that their itineraries could be affected.
Canada emphasized that citizens should maintain a high level of vigilance, as protests, clashes, and nationwide strikes could occur with little or no warning. The advisory cautions that the security situation may deteriorate suddenly, urging Canadians in Bangladesh to remain alert and prepared for unexpected developments.
