Ex-IGP Abdullah Appeals Against Five-Year Sentence in July Uprising Case

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who became a state witness in the July uprising-related crimes against humanity case, has filed an appeal seeking acquittal from his five-year prison sentence. The appeal was submitted on Monday morning.

On November 17, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Mamun to five years’ imprisonment. The verdict was delivered by Tribunal-1, chaired by Justice Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, with Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury as panel members.

Earlier, on March 16 of this year, the prosecution filed a petition to include the former IGP as an accused in the case. The tribunal later accepted the petition, leading to his trial and subsequent conviction.

Mamun’s appeal now seeks to overturn the sentence and secure full acquittal, marking a significant development in the ongoing proceedings related to crimes committed during the July mass uprising.
