A mob beat a Hindu youth to death in the Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh last night (18 December) over “hurting religious sentiment.”
The deceased, Dipu Chandra Das, 30, was the son of Rabi Chandra Das from Mymensingh’s Tarakanda upazila. He used to work at a local garment factory in Bhaluka.
After beating him to death, the body was tied to a tree and set on fire.
Ripon Mia, duty officer at Bhaluka Model Police Station, said, “Tensions spread following allegations of derogatory remarks about the Prophet, and a group of agitated people seized Dipu and subjected him to mob beating around 9:00pm yesterday.
“They then set the body on fire and staged a protest on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Police later arrived at the scene after receiving information and brought the situation under control,” he added.
Ripon said the body has been recovered and sent to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
“No case has been filed in this incident. Action will be taken in accordance with the law if a case is filed,” he added.
