The United States Senate has officially confirmed Brent Christensen as the next U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, making him the country’s 18th envoy to Dhaka.
Christensen announced the news himself in a LinkedIn post on Friday, writing: “I am honored to have received Senate confirmation as the next U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh. I am deeply grateful to President Donald Trump for this opportunity.”
President Trump nominated Christensen on September 2 to succeed Peter Haas, whose tenure ended in April 2024. Following a Senate hearing on October 23, his appointment was finalized with the chamber’s approval.
Christensen is a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, holding the rank of Counselor — one of the top four tiers of American diplomacy. He has more than 20 years of experience working on Bangladesh-related policy across various U.S. government departments.
Currently serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Arms Control and International Security, Christensen previously worked in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021 as Political and Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy. His return underscores the trust placed in him by the administration.
During his Senate confirmation hearing, Christensen emphasized Washington’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s democratic journey. “The United States has long stood by Bangladesh’s bright and democratic path. If confirmed, I will lead the Embassy in building strong ties with the current interim government and the future elected government,” he said.
Christensen’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as Bangladesh prepares for its first national election since the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024. His leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping U.S.-Bangladesh relations in the months ahead.
