Osman Hadi Dies in Singapore After Dhaka Shooting

Inqilab Moncho Spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi passed away today (18 December) while undergoing treatment in Singapore.

Hadi, an aspiring candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on 12 December in Dhaka’s streets in broad daylight.

A firebrand political figure, Hadi rose to prominence during the July Uprising, with his residential area of Rampura being a hotbed of the movement. A fierce critic of the AL regime, Hadi’s unwavering stance won over many supporters.

Hadi was being being treated at the Singapore General Hospital.

Earlier on Monday (15 December), an air ambulance carrying Hadi departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Singapore.

Hadi studied in the 2010-11 session of the Department of Political Science at the University of Dhaka. He first came to wider notice for his role in the 2024 anti-discrimination protests.

Hadi’s ancestral home is in Nalchity, Jhalakathi. His father was a madrasa teacher. He began his education at Nesarabad Kamil Madrasa before later enrolling at Dhaka University.

Yesterday (17 December), Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited Hadi and informed the interim government the gravity of his condition, saying he was in a critical condition.

Hadi was contesting as an independent candidate in the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Election.

On 14 November, he revealed that he received threats of murder, arson at his home, and rape of his mother, sister and wife.

On 12 December, Hadi was shot on head while he was travelling on a battery-run auto-rickshaw in the capital’s Paltan area.

He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and then transferred to Evercare as his condition deteriorated.

On 14 December, a decision was taken by the interim government to transfer him to Singapore for advanced medical treatment as his condition remained critical.

On 15 December, an air ambulance carrying Hadi departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 01:55pm.

Inqilab Moncho member secretary Abdullah Al Zaber filed the case with Paltan Model Police Station naming Faisal Karim Masud as the prime suspect on 14 December.

According to the case statement, two assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on Hadi while he was travelling in a battery-run rickshaw and then fled the scene.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on 16 December recovered the firearms and ammunition used in the shooting at Osman Hadi and arrested an individual in this connection from Narsingdi district.

Till now a total of 10 people have been detained by the law enforcement agency in connection with the case including Faisal’s parents, wife and his close associate Kabir.

Yesterday (17 December) Foysal’s parents gave confessional statements before a court in the case lodged over the attempted murder of Hadi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam recorded their statements and sent them back to jail.
