Tarique Rahman tonight (9 January) officially assumed the role of chairman of the BNP.
His confirmation as chairman came during an emergency meeting of the party’s standing committee at the BNP chairperson’s office in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
The position fell vacant following the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on 30 December 2025.
Tarique, who was the party’s senior vice president, effectively became the party chief after Khaleda’s demise according to the party constitution, and there was no need for a a formal announcement.
Subsection (Ga)(3) of the BNP constitution states that the senior vice chairman shall assume the responsibilities of chairman if the post of chairman becomes vacant for any reason for the remainder of the term.
They will continue in that role until the next chairman is elected and takes office in accordance with the constitution.
Tarique assumed the acting chairman role after a Dhaka court sent Khaleda to jail on 8 February 2018 in a corruption case.
