Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury appointed as new Chief Justice

Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division has been appointed as the country’s 26th Chief Justice.

The government issued a notification in this regard today (23 December).

President Mohammed Shahabuddin has appointed him to the position under Article 95(1) of the Constitution.

According to the notification, his appointment will take effect on the date he takes the oath.

He will have the opportunity to serve as Chief Justice until 18 May 2028.

Chowdhury will succeed the current Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, who is retiring on 28 December this year.

Born on 18 May 1961, Justice Zubayer completed his LLB and LLM at Dhaka University, and later went to London to pursue a Master’s degree in international law.

Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury was enrolled as an advocate in the Judges’ Court in 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. 

He was later appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court Division on 27 August 2003.
