Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman is set to return home tomorrow (25 December).
The BNP organised a reception in Purbachal, on the outskirts of the capital, to mark his return after 18 years.
The party aims to hold one of the largest gatherings in its history at the event. Leaders and activists have been arriving in Purbachal since yesterday (23 December).
Our correspondents observed such scenes while visiting the spot today (24 December).
A massive stage has already been set up, microphones have been installed throughout the surrounding area, and LED screens are being placed far and wide.
Mosquito control medicine is being sprayed across the area, and security forces have been seen patrolling.
Leaders and activists present at the venue told that many of them arrived in Purbachal last night.
Obaidur Rahman, one of the partymen, arrived from Dinajpur’s Khansama upazila last night.
The convener of the Khansama Upazila Jubo Dal told Stream, “I came to Dhaka last night with 25 people. Several hundred people from Dinajpur district also arrived yesterday. Thousands more will come today and tomorrow morning.”
Abdus Salam, a resident of Thakurgaon’s Haripur upazila, arrived alone in Dhaka yesterday morning.
He told , “Leaders and activists from my area will come tomorrow. But I came yesterday. Our leader is returning. I couldn’t just sit at home, so I came.”
Tania Akter, president of the Patuakhali Sadar Mohila Dal, has been staying at the rally venue since yesterday.
Tania told, “For the past 17 years, the fascist Sheikh Hasina government has oppressed the people of Bangladesh. Thousands of BNP leaders and activists were arrested on fabricated cases. Now, Tarique Rahman will return to the country and establish justice. We have come to welcome our leader with that hope.”
Mohammad Mainuddin, a resident of Noakhali Sadar and joint convener of the Dharmapur Union Jubo Dal, arrived in Dhaka last night with 30 companions.
He told , “Our leader has been away from the country for 18 years. He is returning tomorrow. There is no greater joy for us than this.”
Mohammad Sagar came to the venue from the capital’s Uttara with his son.
He told, “My entire family supports the BNP. Tarique Rahman is returning to the country tomorrow. I brought my son to show him the arrangements surrounding his return.
“The past government violated my voting rights. I hope that when Tarique Rahman returns, voting rights will be restored in the country.”
