Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and an independent candidate for Dhaka-8, is returning to Bangladesh in a coffin draped in red and green after succumbing to injuries from a gun attack. His death marks the end of a weeklong struggle for survival in hospitals at home and abroad.
Hadi, who had campaigned on promises to resist injustice and corruption, was shot on December 12 after Friday prayers at Box Culvert Road in Purana Paltan. He was first rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, then transferred to Evercare Hospital, and later flown by air ambulance to Singapore General Hospital on December 15. Despite intensive treatment, he died there on Thursday, December 18.
On Friday afternoon, a post appeared on Hadi’s verified Facebook page alongside images of his coffin. It quoted his earlier words: “I didn’t get fat eating haram, so I don’t need a special coffin. In a simple coffin, with halal blood and a smiling face, I will appear before my Allah.”
His body is scheduled to leave Singapore at 3:50 p.m. local time and arrive at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6:05 p.m. Bangladesh time. Funeral prayers and burial are expected to take place on Saturday.
Hadi’s coffin, wrapped in the national colors, now symbolizes an unfinished promise — but also leaves behind words of courage, protest, and defiance.
