Meta has taken down the second Facebook account of online activist and journalist Elias Hossain. Since Saturday night (December 20), the account has not been visible.
The removal follows a series of incendiary posts from Hossain’s account on Thursday night, after the death of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Osman Hadi. The posts allegedly incited attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, which were later vandalized and set on fire.
By Friday night, Hossain’s primary Facebook account and page had already disappeared, reportedly removed by Meta. He briefly became active again through a second account on Saturday, but that too was taken down later the same night.
Earlier, Meta had removed his first account, which had around two million followers. Several media outlets reported the removal, while Centraist Nation TV posted on Facebook that Meta had “taken down Elias Hossain’s account.”
The developments come amid heightened tensions following recent violence and arson attacks on prominent media houses in Bangladesh.
