Two Bangladeshis were shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria on Friday (8 May).
One of the deceased was identified as Md Morsalin, 22, son of Hebju Mia of Dhajnogor Batanbari village in Kasba upazila. He was a first-year student at Shah Alam Degree College.
His body was later taken inside Indian territory by the BSF.
The identity of the other deceased, who lost his life while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India, could not be confirmed immediately.
The incident occurred around 12:15am near the Kamarhati border.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Shariful Islam, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-60 Brahmanbaria, confirmed the development.
He said approximately 15 Bangladeshis entered Indian territory through the border with the assistance of Indian nationals, allegedly to smuggle goods.
While returning with the goods, members of the BSF’s 49 Battalion from the Pathariadwar camp, obstructed them.
At that point, the smugglers allegedly attacked the BSF personnel. During the ensuing physical altercation, a BSF member opened fire on the smugglers.
Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Shamiul Islam said that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had contacted their Indian counterparts about repatriating the bodies.
