National Citizens’ Party (NCP) leader Motaleb Shikdar was shot by unidentified assailants in Khulna’s Surgical area on Monday around 12 noon.
Local residents rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital immediately after the attack. Shikdar, 37, is known as the party’s Khulna divisional chief and central organizer of its workers’ wing.
Confirming the incident, Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said that Shikdar is currently undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be critical.
NCP’s joint member secretary, Dr. Mahmuda Mitu, posted a photo of the injured leader on Facebook, writing: “NCP’s Khulna divisional chief and central organizer of the workers’ wing, Motaleb Shikdar, has just been shot. He has been taken to Khulna Medical in critical condition.”
Police and local sources said that after initial treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital, Shikdar was taken to Sheikhpara City Imaging Center for a CT scan of his head. His residence is in Pallimangal School area under Sonadanga police station.
Investigators revealed that Shikdar often visited a rented house in Al Aqsa Mosque Lane of Khulna Gazi Medical (Surgical) area. The house was rented by a woman posing as part of a couple, though her identity remains unknown. The shooting occurred inside this rented house.
Following the incident, police searched the house and recovered drug paraphernalia and bottles of foreign liquor. Authorities are working to identify the woman and uncover the motive behind the attack.
OC Rafiqul Islam stated that police have launched raids in several areas to arrest those involved and that an investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the shooting.
